The 12th Lam Woo Distinguished Social Work Awards Ceremony and “Chinese Modernisation and New Development of Social Work in the New Era” Symposium hosted by the Department of Sociology of Peking University, the Department of Applied Social Sciences of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and Peking University-Hong Kong Polytechnic University China Social Work Research Centre was held on 23 March 2024. Nearly over a hundred experts and scholars from the social work field, front-line social workers, teachers and students participated in the event on site. Thousands more joined online. 

The Lam Woo Distinguished Social Work Award aims to reward scholars, students and practicum projects that have made outstanding contributions in the fields of social work education, social work service management and social work practice in Mainland China. It was set up to encourage the nation’s social work profession to take up its social responsibility. To achieve that, the community must continue to enhance the professional level of social work and promote development of professional social work education and social work practice. The number of applications for this year's awards reached a record high. The committee of six Mainland Chinese and Hong Kong reviewers received a total of 50 applications for the Practicum Project Awards, and 54 for the Student Awards. In the end, the review committee gave out a total of five Student Awards and four Practicum Project Awards. In addition to that, two Scholar Awards were given.

After the ceremony, the event continued with a symposium exploring the topic “Chinese Modernisation and New Development of Social Work in the New Era”. Distinguished guest scholars from Mainland China and Hong Kong to contributed to a lively discussion on related themes like social work for the masses, social work for the elderly, and social work for children.
