Dr Ben KU, Associate Professor of APSS and Director of China and Global Development Network, and Ms Kan YIP, Assistant Director (Development and Partnership) of China and Global Development Network, visited Al-Farabi Kazakh National University (KazNU), Almaty, Kazakhstan on 21 Feb 2023. The Rector of KazNU, Dr TUIMEBAYEV Zhanseit, received the delegation from PolyU at the Al-Farabi Library together with a group of representatives. They included Dr ABDIRAIYMOVA Gulmira, Head of the Department of Sociology and Social Work; Dr MEIRBAEV Bekzhan, Dean of the School of Philosophy and Political Science; Dr SALNIKOV Vitaly, Dean of the Faculty of Geography and Environmental Management; Dr KUANTAY Nurzhan Deal of the Faculty of Journalism; and a specialist from the university’s International Relations Office. At the meeting, Dr TUIMEBAYEV warmly welcomed the group from Hong Kong, introduced his team, and shared his development goals for his institution. Dr KU responded by introducing PolyU and stating the relevance and significance of international social development. The professors then exchanged views on pursuing international and interdisciplinary collaboration with each other. They expressed eagerness for the two universities to work together through the establishment of the joint center at KazNU.

After the meeting, Dr ABDIRAIYMOVA Gulmira and Dr MUSTAFINA Aigul continued discussions with the Hong Kong team about the details of the joint center including its name, staffing, funding, and management committee. Prior to the meeting, Ms SIKINBAYEVA Akbope, library director at KazNU, led the Hong Kong team to the joint center’s future site and showed them a wide range of available facilities in the library.
