Classic Readings and Cases of Action Research in China is officially published
01 April 2026
News

While social work action research has gained steady momentum across China, earning recognition from both academia and frontline practitioners, the scholarly discourse in the Chinese Mainland remains in its developmental stages. To address the critical shortage of Chinese-language literature on the subject, Classic Readings and Cases of Action Research in China (行动研究经典读物及实践案例) has been officially released.

The book is edited by Prof. Ben KU (Director of the China and Global Development Network), Dr Ellen FOK (Guest Lecturer and Supervisor of the DSW programme) and Mr Ricky FUNG (Project Associate at CGDN). It serves as a vital bridge between classic foundations on action research and localised practices within the Chinese Mainland.

The book is structured into two comprehensive parts. Part I introduces classic Western readings on social work action research, featuring foundational papers on its philosophy and theory, as well as explorations of participatory action research, collaborative models, and their inherent paradoxes.

Part II presents the practical outcomes of action research conducted by university faculty and frontline practitioners in the Chinese Mainland, offering a diverse range of case studies that span critical fields such as rural revitalisation, community governance, school social work, and mental health rehabilitation.
