Sustainable Livelihood Development in Three Remote Rural Villages in China

Project Period : 1 December 2021 to 30 November 2024

Description of the project :

By applying the social economy framework and social work approach, this 3 years’ project aims at working with the local partners and villagers to connect livelihood innovation with social development and ecological protection. With the empirical findings generated from the services and practice on the three representative project sites in Xinjiang, Inner Mongolia and Henan, our larger objective is to promote new thinking about economy, construct sustainable pathways to rural revitalization, and make policy suggestions about the rural revitalization strategy.

Project Locations

Sustainable Livelihood Development in Gacha Village

Affiliated General Project name : Sustainable Livelihood Development in Three Remote Rural Villages in China

Project location : Gacha Village, Chifeng, Inner Mongolia

Project Period : 1 December 2021 to 30 November 2024

Description of the project :

The Network works with members of Gacha Village in rural Inner Mongolia to help develop a millet cooperative that practices solidarity economy. The cooperative aims to preserve the agricultural and cultural heritage of the region by recovering a lost local collective identity and continuing the practice of millet farming – a traditional crop grown in the area for centuries. In July, local villagers came together for an oral history project to compile their recollections of the past. In October, they will gather together to enjoy a festival celebrating the ending of the harvesting season. The festival will feature music performances, dances, a paper puppet show, and, of course, the tasting of a gamut of millet products.

Description of the project :

A new phase of collaboration between the Network and the local team at Zhoushan village sees the continued renovation of local ancestral cave-dwellings as well as the development of local handicraft products and cultural tourism. The villagers continue to contribute to the solidarity economic project with enthusiasm.

Sustainable Livelihood Development in Jiangbutasi Village

Affiliated General Project name : Sustainable Livelihood Development in Three Remote Rural Villages in China

Project location : Jiangbutasi Village, Altay, Xinjiang

Project Period : 1 December 2021 to 30 November 2024

Description of the project :

We aim to foster the development of cooperatives among rural villagers that practice solidarity economy under the endorsement of the local government. To achieve the above, we offered talks on solidarity economy to the locals. Then we led them to review the previous initiatives they have undertaken and reflect on their collective values and identity so as to rekindle their passion. These initiatives include organizing ecological and cultural experience tours for visitors, crafting traditional black soap, and developing a community development fund. All parties involved in this project seek to develop the initiatives into self-sustaining projects for the villager’s livelihood.
