The China and Global Development Network of the Department of Applied Social Sciences (APSS) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) organised a thought-provoking public talk titled “In Search of a New Vision of Cultural Work: A Reconsideration of ‘The Self as Method’” on 15 February 2025. The event, moderated by Prof. ZHAN Yang, a cultural anthropologist and committee member of the CGDN, featured Wu Qi, the editor-in-chief of China’s influential cultural publisher One-Way Street, as the speaker. Held in Room V322, the lecture attracted nearly 200 attendees, including scholars, students and cultural enthusiasts from both within and outside the university.
Wu Qi drew from his extensive experience in reading, editing, publishing and creative practices to share incisive observations on contemporary Chinese society. He proposed innovative directions for cultural work in an era of rapid social transformation, emphasising the role of “mutual network” and “alternative safe net”. His talk sparked a lively dialogue during the Q&A session, with many young participants expressing enthusiasm for the opportunity to engage in such critical cultural discussions in Hong Kong.
The lecture is part of APSS’s “Frontiers in Social Sciences” series.
